Board votes to demolish historic N. Idaho school

WORLEY, Idaho (AP) - School board officials in northern Idaho have agreed to settle the fate of a historic school with a wrecking ball.

The Plummer-Worley School District board voted this week to proceed with the demolition of the historic Worley School - despite the efforts of a historical group to preserve the old, dilapidated building.

Worley Historical Society President Catherine Morris told the Coeur d'Alene Press (http://bit.ly/T8qnQk ) tearing the building down represents a loss of national, historic proportions.

The school was built in the 1930s as part of a Works Progress Administration Project. It was closed in 2009 due to the risk of roof collapse.

District board member Ida "JR" Gustin says she understands the historic value, but she also sees it as a community hazard and potential threat to the community.
