Kitten's loud voice saves his life

PALM CITY — Employees at the St. Lucie County Complex in Fort Pierce became concerned when the sound of pitiful meowing was heard somewhere in the office building. But where was the sound coming from? They were unable to pinpoint the location. The sounds grew more and more frantic as the day progressed, and the employees became more and more worried. Still, they were unable to find the source of the crying.

When the meowing resumed the next morning, the employees couldn’t bear to let the cat continue suffering. Wherever the poor fellow was, they were going to find him. An all-out search was made of the building and it was finally determined that the meows were coming from behind a wall. How any animal could get back there was a mystery. But, sure enough, upon breaking away part of the wall there he was; a tiny kitten, not more than three weeks old, trapped and starving.

Someone reached down and lifted the kitten out of his prison. Now what? They were faced with the next dilemma; what to do with this noisy baby that clearly needed help. One of the employees remembered that a friend of his volunteers with Hobe Sound Animal Protection League, a feline rescue and adoption organization in Palm City.

A phone call was made, and within moments the volunteer was on her way to pick up the kitten. He was taken to HSAPL’s sanctuary where it was determined that he was healthy, but dehydrated and hungry. He was still too young to eat on his own so a regimen of bottle-feeding began. And in light of his unusual beginnings, the kitten was given the name WallE.

WallE is now closely monitored. He comes to work each day with the executive director, and goes home with her each night. And he is thriving; full of energy and growing practically before everyone’s eyes.

Recently, a couple met WallE and fell in love with him. Eager to adopt the little kitten with the big voice, they have already completed the necessary paperwork to take him home when he is old enough.

WallE’s loud meow was also a lucky meow. For it was that meow that saved his life; that and the kindness of the employees at the St. Lucie County Complex who were determined to find the kitten trapped behind the wall.
