Let me preface this posting with an invitation that all you fine V-Peeps subscribe to The Nation if, for no other self-enlightening purpose, than to browse and experience its archives that date (issue by each and every issue) from July 6, 1865 (with a VERY fascinating editorial titled "Were the States Ever Sovereign) to August 27, 2012 (just delivered today). Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) is downloadable in PDF format.
That said, here is a poem titled "The American Struggle" by Aubrey DeVere from the July 6, 1865 edition of The Nation.
