[Vision2020] [more] Look See What Tri-State is Promoting . . .

Great post, Saundra!

I can't help but be reminded that, when I asked for examples of folks
who saved the day with their guns, almost all were cases of robbery.
The fact is that among violent crimes robbery is the big leader. But
the percentage of robberies in which the victim is murdered or even
shot is relatively low. Most robbers just want your money.

We focus on the mass spree killings: Columbine, Aurora, the Sikh
temple near Milwaukee, etc. But those events have an incredibly low
probability. You are MUCH more likely to die in a car accident than to
die in a mass spree killing. Better example: You are much more likely
to break a hip while taking a shower. Yet the response to the last
worry is not to rubberize your bathtub.

So what happens? We have people running around with handguns because
of irrational fears, shooting robbers who are unlikely to shoot them,
being regarded as heroes when in fact they are more than likely
overreacting and escalating an already violent situation.

I'm not getting a handgun anytime soon. And I'll sooner rubberize my
bathtub or stop driving once I become overly worried about my safety.
