A number of years ago I was living in apartment and at about 12:30am one night, I was awaken by the sound of a screaming woman in the courtyard outside my bedroom window. When I looked to see what the commotion was all about, I saw a man in bathrobe calmly walk out of his downstairs apartment and then I heard 'Get up against the wall! UP AGAINST THE WALL!!!' and then a popping sound as if a cap gun had gone off which I knew was a gun shot. I immediately called 911 to report a shooting and the operator told me that the switchboard was now lighting up with incoming calls and instructed me to stay inside and to stay away from the windows. I had adrenaline pumping through my system and I hate to admit this, but in all the excitement 'I had never felt so alive' so I phoned one of my hard right wing gun nut former U of I room mates, woke him up, and shouted into the phone 'There's been a shooting outside my apartment!!!'. He was ticked off that I was calling so late and that I had woken him up.

Long story short, a guy had kicked in my neighbor's door looking for payment on debt (which I think was drug related). Terrified, she ran out screaming. My downstairs neighbor who was a retired police officer, grabbed his gun and went outside, ordered the knife wielding bad guy up against the wall, and when the perp made a threatening move, the ex cop shot him and the one bullet actually went through both of the guys legs which incapacitated him until the police arrived to haul his slimey ass away to the pokey. After an investigation, the DA decided not file any charges on the ex-cop for the shooting. I talked to the ex-cop about it sometime later and he said that period of time after the shooting had been extremely stressful on him. :(
