International Walk to School Day - October 12

October 7, 2011 (Moscow, Idaho) - The City of Moscow will joining all elementary schools, the Moscow Junior High School, and schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 12, 2011.   Safe Routes to Schools is encouraging all students to walk or bike to school to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Each school will be doing a unique activity at our around their school on International Walk to School Day.  Activities in the past have included taking an aerial school photo of participants, having University of Idaho athletes make special appearances and participate in activities with the students, colorful walking school buses, carbon foot-print tallies, and much more! For those who have to drive, designated park and walk locations allocated for families to park and either walk to school with their student or let their student walk with an International Walk to school volunteer will be available. Parent volunteers and University of Idaho students and athlete volunteers will be helping with this event at each school.  Police will be present in every school zone for the morning of the event, as they are for every school day.  Motorists are asked to be aware of their speed on this and all school days.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by the University of Idaho Safe Routes to School Program, which is funded by a grant received by the City of Moscow. Safe Routes to School encourages safe walking and biking to school, promotes biking and walking education and engages the community to build a more walkable and bikable Moscow.
