Group still mulling local option, no decision yet

BOISE, Idaho (AP) - An Idaho group mulling putting a local option tax initiative before voters in 2012 still hasn't decided whether to begin collecting signatures to get the measure on the ballot.

Jason Lehosit, a political consultant who is helping advise a consortium of business people, told The Associated Press on Monday that a decision about moving ahead is still pending.

Legislation died in 2008 after Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter and House GOP lawmakers insisted on constitutional restrictions that proponents refused to stomach.

But some, including former Albertsons Inc. Chief Executive Officer Gary Michael, are keeping the idea alive, insisting residents should be able to vote to tax themselves for things like public transit or building roads.

Some conservatives remain concerned this is just another way to raise cash for pet projects.
