Dr. Labine was one of the best play-by-play announcers anywhere, regardless of the size of the town or market, high school or college.  I listened to his descriptions of countless games over the years.  He was the Bob Curtis of Moscow High sports.

In 1986, my folks recorded one of the Bear Football games off of KRPL, and that's the first time I ever heard my name on the radio.
I've missed hearing Doc do the Bear games the last few years, and this news makes me sad.
So, for Doc,  "Be a good sport, will ya."

Dr. Leonard C. Labine, 91, Moscow



 



The voice of the Moscow Bears signed off for the last time Sunday morning, May 8, 2011, at Aspen Park in Moscow. Leonard C. (Doc) Labine was born Feb. 16, 1920, in Nashua, N.H., to Louis and Illa Labine. 



He was raised by his mother and grandmother, Mae Campbell, until he moved with his mother to attend the University of Idaho. Len and his mother enlisted in the U.S. Army together while he was at UI. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and played basketball, baseball and football for the Vandals as a freshman. 



While at UI he met Camille Short. They moved to Louisville, Ky., to attend dental school at the University of Louisville. Doc was in the Army and the Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean War. His mother died during WWII in an avalanche on Mt. Vesuvius in Italy. His marriage to Camille ended in divorce. 



He married Gloria Del Valle in Moscow in 1977. 



Doc, as he was known for many years, practiced dentistry for 50 years in Moscow, broadcast football and basketball for the Moscow Bears for 37 years and had a sports show at KPRL for many years at noon and dinner time, where he would end his program each session with a "Be a good sport, will ya." He also broadcast area sports for Troy, Deary and Kendrick, as well as the Vandal freshman basketball and baseball games. In addition, when the Vandal football team was in the Idaho Athletics Association playoffs and Bob Curtis was with the football team, Doc would broadcast Vandal basketball. 



He simply loved sports. His highlight might have been when he was inducted into the North Idaho Sports Hall of Fame. He was on the North Idaho Sports board for many years inducting many of Idaho's famous sports figures so he was proud to be included with all of the sports greats. His last years were spent working for the Moscow School District at the junior high. He enjoyed the interaction with the staff and students. He was an avid Vandal booster and served as the president of the Latah County Chapter, as the chairman of the annual fundraiser, and served on the National Vandal Booster Board. 



Doc was a life member of the Moscow Elks No. 249 and enjoyed serving as the marshal of the annual Ken Jordan Sole Survivor Tournament until his health kept him from continuing. He also was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the Moscow Bear Boosters. 



Len is survived by his wife Gloria; daughter, Suzanne and husband Jerry Jacksha; sons, Lance and wife Robin, Chuck and Lon; his stepsons, Fernie and wife Kathy, Carlos, and Rudy and wife Tanya; stepdaughters, Belinda and husband Tim Laird, and Candy and husband Tony Kevan; with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a very dear friend Jeanne Stout. 



In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Moscow Bear Boosters or the Vandal Boosters. 



A celebration of life for the "Voice of the Bears" will be conducted later this summer.
