Dan Kraus and Cat in a Tree Rescue

Dan Kraus started his Cat in a Tree Rescue Service in the winter of 1999
in the Seattle area. It all started after an owner with their beloved pet
cat stuck up an 80-foot tree for five cold and rainy nights, called the
tree service that Dan works with. The cat's owner had made many calls
looking for help. Dan felt for the upset homeowner, so after work he
drove out and climbed up to the stuck cat. He remembers how miserable the
cat looked. She was so wet, weak and bedraggled, that she could barely
muster a meow. Dan has always had a soft spot for cats, and helping an
upset person through doing something he loved, climbing trees, also felt
good. Dan’s Cat in a Tree Rescue Service was born. To date in 2011, he has
traveled all over the Pacific Northwest and has rescued almost 750 cats
(plus an assortment of pet birds, orphaned baby squirrels, model airplanes
and pet iguanas). Each cat rescue is a story filled with drama, love,
danger and a happy ending.

In 2003, Dan Kraus started www.catinatreerescue.com. The site has
information about cats stuck in trees (See Info and Faqs) and a directory
of climbers around the world committed to rescuing cats stuck in trees
(See the Directory). Owners with cats stuck in trees in other US States,
Canada and Internationally can find help as a result of this directory.
Dan Kraus created the Cat in a Tree Web Site to help cat-owners and
pet-lovers outside of his immediate geographical area by building a
directory of skilled tree climbers willing to be feline-fetchers.

Dan Kraus is an ISA Certified Arborist and the 2005 International Tree
Climbing Champion. Dan has been featured in numerous magazine and
newspaper articles (See Articles). Performing expert residential tree care
for more than 20 years, Dan has also climbed trees for research and
hurricane relief work after Hurricanes Iniki and Katrina. Dan learned to
do tree work on the Hawaiian Islands, where he grew up working for his
father’s tree company, Tree Works Inc. Dan met Justina at the 1997 Pacific
Northwest ISA Tree Conference, they fell in love, and Dan moved and began
doing tree work in Seattle, Washington in 1998. The Kraus family has 2
daughters, Jasmine and Violet.
