Idaho House Votes to Limit Megaload Lawsuits
BOISE (AP) - A measure aimed at undercutting opposition to oil-equipment shipments on U.S. Highway 12 cleared the Idaho House on a 53-16 vote.
The measure, which heads to the Senate following today's vote, would require anyone who files a lawsuit targeting a state transportation project to post a bond of 5 percent of the insured value of the load.
The Idaho Transportation Department granted ExxonMobil Corp. a permit for a test run of the massive loads, a precursor to up to 200 additional loads bound for the Kearl Oil Sands project in Alberta.
An environmental group has filed a federal complaint to block ExxonMobil’s plans.
Democratic foes called the standard ridiculously high, while proponents including Rep. Dick Harwood of St. Maries said it's needed to block frivolous lawsuits.
