[Vision2020] Fw: A $50 Lesson

That's an excellent question. I know several young adults who've been
working full-time when it's available (many times, young adults are willing
to work full-time but the employers can't/won't give them the hours) for the
same places for over a year, and they still don't make $8/hour or have
benefits of any kind.

Yes - that's in Latah County (Moscow specifically) and includes small
businesses and large ones, and the "kids"are hard workers & very dependable
. . . the kind of workers we hear are lacking. The businesses "can't"
afford to pay decent wages or provide benefits, but those owners have
lifestyles that are very high while keeping their employees in poverty.

No, I won't name businesses because these kids need their jobs. Besides, I
think most of us know who those owners are, anyway - they're the kind of
people who "promise" full-time hours and maybe even benefits but never come
through. They're the kind of people who teach our young adults all the
wrong lessons about employment, and then we wonder why after several years
those same young adults now expect to be screwed rather than valued by their
local employers.

It's really no wonder our communities have difficulty keeping more of our
best from leaving for decent work elsewhere as soon as they can.

Roger,

How many 40 hour/$8.00 per hour jobs are available in Latah County as
opposed to the number of persons that are willing to take these jobs?

I have always supported taking care of the mentally ill, the handicapped and
our veterans. I do not thing we do enough for the veterans. Anyone can be
unemployed for a short period of time. I have been there too. I fully
support Workmen's Compensation and short term welfare assistance. I also
donate to private charities that work in these areas. What I object to is
the long term payouts to the unemployed. Some where there needs to an end to
it. There are jobs available if one is willing to work. It may not be the
best job or pay much, but any job is better that no job. It you get paid
$8.00/hr. that is $320.00/wk. That will pay a few bills. I have done that
and it is better than nothing.
