This is a very tragic occurrence.

I am sure that all our sympathies and good will go out to the victim's family and friends. This is the third woman [and one ex-husband/boyfriend] murdered here by either her husband or [ex-]lover in a very short time period.

We ought to appreciate the effectiveness of the MPD and their allies in handling this situation with dispatch.

The facts so far unearthed, and they may be incomplete, raise some troubling questions about the UI's handling of this matter. I hope more facts are forthcoming so that we may know what happened, and so that the UI can take steps to lower the probability that something like this does not happen again.

A fuller account than what appears below can be found on either the DN or the LMT website.

Professor-student romance ends in murder-suicide
BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Police say a former University of Idaho professor killed himself after fatally shooting a graduate student he had recently dated.

The body of 31-year-old Ernesto Bustamante was found early Tuesday in a Moscow hotel room. Police say he apparently shot himself in the head with a revolver. A day earlier, 22-year-old Katy Benoit was shot to death on the front porch of her Moscow home.

Her two roommates told police they had been baking cookies late Monday when Benoit stepped outside for a cigarette and about two minutes later, they heard gunfire.

Benoit's roommates told police they had been concerned for her well-being because Bustamante had weapons and multiple personalities.

A friend of Bustamante told police that Bustamante referred to himself as a "psychopathic killer" and "the beast."

It seems to me that UI management must have been aware of Bustamante's "condition". Or did they simply ignore it?

Seeya round town, Moscow.
