I was a Veterinary Specialist. It was the Sedan Project, I flew over the crater an hour after the blast. We had beagles stationed at 5, 10, 15 and 20 miles away. We checked the amount of radiation they picked up. I was 15 miles away. With in 10 minutes after the blast we were covered with dust. It was in our eyes so bad it was difficult to see.
At the Medical Field Service School we used Angora Goats to train doctors and others in mass casualty situations.
At the 51st Veterinary Hospital we provided veterinary support to the US Dog Training Center. The dogs were German Shepherds and were primarily trained as guard dogs. Two loads of dogs were sent from there to Viet Nam when were were still in an advisory roll.
