[Vision2020] Bouma didn't show up

Matt,

For full disclosure, I'll start by saying I'm a KRFP board member.

KRFP has done these debates and call-ins for several elections, and I don't think there's ever been an accusation of ambushes or unfairness. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is something community members and those running for office have been grateful. Tom Trail showed up.

And I heard Bouma on KRFP being interviewed by himself last week or the week before. So he wasn't opposed to appearing on the station. So saying the station is unfair and he won't appear there at all is not an explanation.

What he is unwilling to do is answer tough questions. The Daily News has abdicated any attempt to be journalists and ask the questions, and he won't show up where someone might ask him something tough.

Is it a biased question to ask him if he agrees with his pastor? I don't think so. I don't care about his speeding tickets. I don't see any reason not to vote for him because of them. I think Wayne is dead wrong on this.

But I think the questions about the sermons are fair, and he is running away from anyone who will ask them. That's cowardly.

If you want to run for office, you should be willing to answer questions like those.

Sunil

I always felt the democratic process was the abilty to vote, and the option too run for office. Not the obligation to discuss you desires in office, if elected. Although it would behoove an individual to speek your opinion. Thus right-in candidates. There is no law stating you must talk when asked.

The fact is these candidates didn't show. Most likely hurting themselves. But why is the question? My answer is the same notion that most democrats dont appear on the likes of a fox based broadcast. I mean do you really feel that 92.5 is a nuetral based channel? I feel that they knew the biasesd questions would spat more untruths and do more harm than if they didn't show. I myself would have talked but I never back down either.

Take care

Matt

Great letter, Sue! Thanks!

Both Bouma and Young seem to have shown a bigoted view toward Democrats and a failure to discuss issues that matter to constituents. And this is before the election! How would they act if elected? Doesn't look good!

I should admit that I haven't been following the election until recently. And I can't follow it much now at least not on the V. There is a lack of focus on the issues because of all this crap. It is a shame that Democratic process seems to be thwarted. I don't get the sense that Bouma and Young have much faith in the process or much respect for the voters.

I wish just one Republican would speak out against this thwarting of the Democratic process. Dan? Roger? Gary? Walter? Just what political system do you guys support? I see your support for your party but not our system of government. Prove me wrong, please!

I am furious about his refusal to discuss issues with his opponent. Gresham Bouma is milking the postcard incident for all it’s worth. I’m beginning to wonder now, just who did send it? Bouma has certainly used this as an excuse to hide behind his followers and keep his philosophical ideas to himself. I have to say, I wish now I had not denied Nick Gier the opportunity for a follow up question at the AARP Forum. I recognized Bouma was evading the legitimate concerns of Mr. Gier and others who have read the sermons posted on the church website (I guess they’ve been pulled now.) but I had never through the years allowed a followup and decided not to at that time. I was totally stupid. Bouma knew he would get away with his evasive rationale and I was concerned about being even handed. I neglected to be fair because I was concerned about protocol. Nick, I’m sorry.

The other concern I have is Bouma’s education ad. He touts his service as a public school teacher, auditor, whatever, shows the picture of his cute (he really is, I talked with him) young son, who has been home schooled. One needs to ask, “when teachers school their own students at home or in places other than the public schools, just where does their loyalty lie?”

Someone on this website mentioned what? Bouma’s 4 or 5 traffic tickets over the past decade. (Declaration: I got one, too, once. It was 40 something years ago when Scott was a baby. It was all his fault.) And one of Bouma’s is for speeding through a work zone. And a fishing violation....another issue. I wasn’t going to speak to this anywhere, but Bouma refuses to deal with the “unwashed” so I’ll do it here. The positions of his minister are legitimate questions for those of us who would ask Bouma’s response to them. I was particularly incensed by the incident when his minister promoted Bouma’s campaign from the pulpit then admitted he knew it was a violation of federal law for him to do so. Did Bouma repudiate that statement? There is no record he did. And now, I understand, all that material has been removed from their website. Are they ashamed? They should be. What it leaves me to believe is this: GRESHAM BOUMA WILL OBEY THE LAW IF HE FEELS IT IS HIS RELIGIOUS RESPONSIBILITY TO DO SO. IF HE FEELS IT ISN’T, HE IS PERFECTLY WILLING TO LOOK THE OTHER WAY. Reminds me of a former governor of Texas who said it wasn’t a lie if there wasn’t a Bible in the room. I do not want that sort of person representing me in Boise—Bouma must love Phil Hart, he campaigned with him. So now he’s willing to tie himself to folks who don’t pay their taxes and steal from public school children. No, you can’t ask him about any of that. He refuses to participate in any activity in which he can’t control the questions.

Title says it all. Bouma didn't show up to the radio call-in show tonight. This upsets me greatly, because I REALLY wanted to ask him a question. Grrrrrr. . .
