THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
Here are the Ten Commandments issued by Yahweh (the LORD) God on
Mount Sinai. Test your knowledge by numbering them from 1 to 10 in
the spaces provided.
__ a. I am Yahweh (the LORD) your God
__ b. You shall have no other Gods besides me
__ c. You shall not make for yourself an idol ...
__ d. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of Yahweh (the
LORD) your God ...
__ e. Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy ...
__ f. Honor your father and your mother ...
__ g. You shall not murder
__ h. You shall not commit adultery
__ i. You shall not steal
__ j. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
__ k. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife
__ l. You shall not covet your neighbor's house ...
These commandments are from the list in Exodus 20:2-17. There is a
similar list in Deuteronomy 5:6-21. Can you find anywhere in these
two chapters where Yahweh God said there were ten of them? That
explains why each one of the above list of twelve, from a. through
l., is considered one of the Ten Commandments by either Protestants,
Catholics, or Jews.
Now look at items f through j; Jesus listed them differently:
h, g, i, j, f (Luke 18:19-20)
g, h, i, j, f, plus "You shall not defraud" (Mark 10:17-19)
g, h, i, j, f, plus "You shall love your neighbor as
yourself" (Matthew 19:18-19)
Jesus did not number these commandments, either, nor did he say there
were supposed to be ten of them.
So next time preachers, teachers, lawyers, judges, or politicans make
an issue of the so-called Ten Commandments, demand a written,
numbered list of them, so you will know what they claim they are
talking about.
