PRESS RELEASE
Title: City of Moscow & University of Idaho Host International Walk to School Day

October 5, 2010 - The City of Moscow will joining the Moscow School District, participating Charter Schools in Moscow and schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 13, 2010.

The event will begin before school with kids, parents, and community leaders walking from their homes to school or from walk to school sites set up at various schools. Students walking and biking to school will receive special prizes and acknowledgment for participating in Walk to School Day. Approximately 1,000 students from Moscow School District Elementary, Junior High School, and Charter Schools, will be walking to school on October 13 along with parents, teachers, and community leaders. Mayor Nancy Chaney will be present at the corner of Mountain View and 'D' Streets and University of Idaho athletes will be cheering and encouraging students along at each school.

In the U.S., International Walk to School Day is expected to include 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by the City of Moscow and University of Idaho Safe Routes to School Program. Safe Routes to School encourages safe walking and biking to school, promotes biking and walking education and engages the community to build a more walkable and bikable Moscow.
