Perhaps you should do a little reading about the Gadsden Purchase. Back then 
the USA paid Mexico an equivalent in today's dollars of the better part of a 
quarter of a billion dollars for that parcel of desert land. It was the last 
major land acquisition onto the contiguous "lower" 48 states.
