Wayne,

You are not required to buy car insurance. There are millions that don't have it. You can walk, run, ride a bike, take a bus, hitch a ride, etc. Many millions of people cannot drive or choose not to drive.

In addition, the insurance you are required to buy to operate a vehicle, only is for covering the damage you do to others and their property, not to yourself or your own vehicle. You can also waive out of buying car insurance if you can show that your income or wealth would be high enough to cover any reasonable damage you could inflict on others.

Health Insurance you are required to buy regardless of any circumstances you are in.

So they are not comparable.

Garrett,

You asked: "Can you think of anything else the government requires its citizens to buy?"

Car Insurance!  And it's not mandatory for everyone that operates a vehicle, just motor vehicles.
Based on all the discussions on the board about cars/trucks vs bicycles, don't you think it would be a good idea for bicycle
operators to be insured too? IF they want to share the roads at are paid for by gas taxes, shouldn't they at least be insured?
I've seen a lot of discussion about what "rights" bicycle operators have, yet I haven't seen any discussion of their responsibilities.

And what about the cost of various licenses?  How about a bicycle license?

Just throwing that out for discussion.
