[Vision2020] UI to Furlough Employees

Why is Walter Steed sucking up to UI President Nellis? Is Steed trying to board that "let's pay a high priced consultant rather than apply our own elbow grease" gravy train? Does the UI see that one of its functions is to feed slime?

  Wayne,

Even though the UI has a legal department, why is so much being spent on outside counsel? If our present counsel need so much help, isn't it time to send them on their way and hire competent, hard working counsel?

Same question, different department: Why is money being spent on outside benefits advisors? If the present staff can't do the job, let's find some that can.

Here's a different problem which the furlough application brings to mind: There are several very talented, working-very-long-hours music school faculty who are grossly underpaid. Why are we running the risk of losing these fine people and thus having to spend a lot more money on hiring replacements that most likely will not be of as high quality?

    Wayne,

An even better one would be why, since we have an ABA accredited College of Law, does the administration maintain it's own Legal Department? Why are outside architects brought in for projects
on campus when we have a Department of Architecture? and so on........

And yes, I understand that some of what I advocate is radical, we are living in radical economic times. And while I understand that some disruption will occur, in the end it would be for the better.

        Mo,

While I agree that laying off the entire administration won't solve a thing, it is the administration that is responsible, and should bear the biggest burden of the cuts.

For instance, draw a line in the sand, say $100,000.00 in salary and bonuses. Everything above that should be up for grabs, spread across the board of those making 100k or more.
Now, some folks will say, then those making more than 100k will leave and go elsewhere. WHERE? Those jobs aren't out there and if they can find them, more power to them. And real leaders LEAD,
so where are the university 'leaders" that are stepping up to the plate and saying: "Times are rough, so instead of making 350.000 this year, pay me 200k." ?

Has anyone got a list of the U of I employees that with salary and bonuses make more than 100k? Amy be that number has to even drop down to 80k a year. OK, who can't live
comfortably in Moscow on 80k a year?

And now that things are getting tight, the administration, those poor folks making 100k or 80k plus, are going to have to make very tough cuts of NON ESSENTIAL things that go on at the University,
starting with the NCAA sports programs. Now, when everyone so inclined starts to complain about there being no football, baseball, basketball etc, advise them to ask the legislature to give
more money for sports programs rather than academics. And yes, that doesn't just hold for the college/university level but also for the grad and high schools. More important that little Jimmy or
Janie can spell FOOTBALL than play it. Face it, non essentials have to be cut, and unfortunately, sports has to go before academics.

Now, we look at other governments and agencies and ask, IS THIS NEEDED? A great example of total irresponsible government waste is the new chain just installed on the western side of the federal parking lot
on Jefferson. Five short poles, installed by a contractor, connected by waist high chains. FOR WHAT?

And then there is the city council. $500 a head for a kumbaya session paid to an out of state contractor to do what, make sure they get along? The reason I voted for the folks I voted for was to see
CHANGE, I don't want them to get along! IF that session was so VITAL to the council members, would THEY have paid for it out of their own pockets? IF the answer is yes, well why didn't they?
And how about when we do spend, we have the local government spend it locally rather than spending it on out of Moscow, out of State contractors and employees?

I have been wanting to ask folks this question for a LONG time....How would you solve the financial problems at UI? You all are great at criticizing and griping about the decisions that are being made, but I have yet to hear from any one of you a better way. Yes, it sucks that people are going to be required to take furloughs, yes it sucks that programs are being merged and so on and so on and so on. But guess what the economy is in the shits, the state is taking money away from everything including higher ed, and the university has to do something.

So please, all of you who are so wise and all knowing how would you solve the problem? Without laying the administration off, that won't solve a thing.
