What about the kid who did take the plunge and try it "once"? Now they're ashamed and think to themself "Welp, I done went down the rabbit hole and my fate is sealed. I tried it once so I'm screwed, might as well keep the good times rolling while they last."

> If Nancy Chaney said that Moscow does not have a meth problem, I would be dismayed beyond measure. Having spent an enormous amount of time working with a meth addict and a few of her friends in the Moscow area over the last five or six years, it's clear to me that Moscow proper and the outlying rural areas is choking with a meth problem.
>
> Our friend Shannon, now deceased, was addicted. Her husband, also a dear friend, was the biggest meth dealer on the Palouse and is now serving prison time because of it. Her daughter has had a terrible time escaping its clutches, as have other friends of Shannon's. I organized her funeral in March 2009; some 75 people, many of whom were meth users, showed up to honor her memory, and I have heard of a successful, long-lasting recovery for only one or two of them. I know another family dealing with methamphetamine use and remember how heartsick I was when I found out that an elementary school classmate of my son's -- right here in Moscow -- had to be taken from her home because of one parent's addiction. The Celebrate Recovery program at Bridge Bible Church appears to be growing, as well; many of its clients are meth-affected.
>
> Of course, many of our neighbors, both on the Right and on the Left, also don't think Moscow has an HIV problem, a domestic violence problem, or a hunger problem. Some on the Christian Right locally have made it clear none of those things -- IF they existed -- would be of any particular concern to them, and that's shameful. But my experience with some on the Left has lead me to see an insularity that fosters the notion that since none of their acquaintances use meth, or get the shit beaten out of them by their husbands, or go to bed hungry, or live with undiagnosed HIV, it must not be a problem. That's just as shameful, and I would be surprised if, in fact, Mayor Chaney thought meth wasn't an issue in her town.
