[Vision2020] Good spring enrollment numbers for U of I

I like how UI tries to take credit for the enrollment increases, as though it wasn't a sour tasting job market that isn't driving people in record droves to increase their job skills.

As soon as the job market clears, and people have a way out, they will be running for the bigger cities and UI will once against scratch it's clueless heads as to what happened and who they can blame for the decline.

If they really wanted to increase enrollment they should create a community college on the Palouse and encourage graduating sophomores to transfer to UI. Or create vocational opportunities for people that don't want to waste 11 semesters and half the amount of money they will ever make in their life getting a worthless piece of paper from a improperly funded University.

At least we are winning football games, that is something they can take credit for doing.

MOSCOW, Idaho – Efforts aimed at improving the freshman experience are bearing fruit for the University of Idaho: 93 percent of freshman returned for spring semester, 3 percent more than the previous spring. On the 10th day of classes for spring semester 2010, enrollment numbers at the University of Idaho statewide registered an increase of 320, 3 percent over the previous spring, to a statewide total of 11,512.

"We continue to focus our efforts on making sure that freshmen at the university are positioned for success," said Steve Neiheisel, assistant vice president forenrollment management. "This includes a number of initiatives, such as additional assessment and support for new students early in the semester, as well as programs to assist students with academic difficulties after their first semester. We measure our success in how well our students do; the fact that such a high number of freshman returned for spring semester leaves us encouraged."

In addition to improvement in retaining new freshmen from fall, new transfer students continue to be an ever-increasing population on campus. For spring there are 277 new transfers, which is 81 more students than a year ago, up 41 percent.

The enrollment numbers for the University of Idaho include full-time and part-time students at the university, whose main campus in Moscow features a residential living and learning experience. Enrollment on the Moscow campus is 10,283 for spring 2010, up 2 percent from a year ago.

The university’s statewide centers also showed enrollment increases across the state. Spring enrollment at Boise and Twin Falls is 436, up 12 percent from a year ago; enrollment at Coeur d’Alene is 460, up 16 percent. Enrollment at the university’s center in Idaho Falls stands at 333 students; this is an increase in degree-seeking students of 10 percent over a year ago, although non-degree students have declined.

Strong spring numbers bode well for fall. ”We've seen a steady increase in interest with a 14 percent increase in spring applications, which can translate into a solid foundation for fall as well," Neiheisel said. “This continues to confirm that students and parents throughout the state understand what a difference the University of Idaho makes in their lives.”

With the Feb. 15 priority application deadline for scholarships and financial aid looming, Neiheisel encouraged students to apply for both financial aid and the university's fall semester.
"We want every student to have the chance to meet that Feb. 15 deadline," he said. "Not only is a college education affordable at the University of Idaho, but those who apply on time get our attention on time."

The university will host Vandal Friday on March 26, a premiere annual day when future students visit campus, register for fall classes and learn how to have a successful start to college. In addition, for those unable to attend Vandal Friday new student events are scheduled on April 2, 9 and 19 in Moscow, and on April 16 in Boise. Find out more details online at www.uidaho.edu/vandalfriday.aspx; reservations are required.

"We want students to get their applications in early for consideration," said Neiheisel. "The University of Idaho is about the right students at the right institution at the right time. We have a great century-long tradition here of training future leaders of the world here. We want Idaho's best and brightest students to stay in state and enrich our community of learners."

For consistent reporting purposes, universities tend to use fall enrollment numbers as the official totals for the current academic year. For equitable tracking, like-semester numbers are compared: fall-to-fall, spring-to-spring.
