Silas Parks pleads not guilty to first degree murder, arson

Silas Parks pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and one
count of first-degree arson in connection with the deaths of his wife, Sarah
J. Parks, 28, and the couple's unborn child this afternoon.

Sarah Parks, 28, was found in the couple's burned-out duplex at 904 Vandal
Drive on June 24.
The trial is scheduled to begin March 22 with a pretrial conference
scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 8.

Each first-degree murder charge carries the possibility of life in prison or
death, and a fine of up to $50,000. The arson charge carries a maximum
sentence of 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

The 30-minute arraignment took place before a crowd of less than 20 people
at the Latah County Courthouse. District Court Judge John Stegner explained
to charges to Parks as well as his rights.

Parks remained stoic throughout, only nodding slightly to acknowledge
Stegner's explanation. Parks' attorney Ray Barker entered the official "not
guilty" plea with Parks' only confirming with a quiet "yes" upon Stegner's
confirmation that he understood the plea.
