I just heard of the death of Chris Witmer, a man familiar to many of us in Moscow and perhaps more familiar to me in recent months.

I'm shaking as I write this. From the timeline I can put together, one of the last things Chris did was post a comment to my blog, a post I chose not to accept because it perhaps didn't represent him as he'd like to be remembered. I think anyone reading this is aware of the disdain in which Chris held me and others he presumed to be enemies of the Gospel, and I can only speak for myself in saying that I forgave him long ago for any offenses he committed. Chris knew I was praying for him, and I'd like to think he returned the grace.

It doesn't matter if this man liked me or not -- his death is a tragedy insofar as it leaves seven girls without their daddy and a grieving wife in Japan who must be overwhelmed with grief. I pray God's blessings and consolation on them, today and every day of their lives, as they remember their father and husband. His church family must be shaken to the core, and I know he had many friends here. May the Lord keep all of them close.

Finally, I'm reminded that life is a fleeting thing. Let's all walk in love and grace.
