Ismat Ara & Abdul Manna Sheikh Award Winner Announced
Moscow, Idaho -Mayor Nancy Chaney presented the biennial Ismat Ara and
Abdul Mannan Sheikh Community Unity Award to Chief of Police Dan Weaver
on November 18, 2009. In commemoration and honor of the Unity Award the
recipient, Chief Weaver's name will be placed on a central plaque
located in City Hall as well as a commemorative plaque in East City
Park.
The letter of nomination for Chief Weaver described him as "an unsung
hero, unassuming, calm and yet strong and steady service to the
community and his style of leadership contribute greatly to the unity
and livability of our community." The letter also states "Moscow would
be a far less happy and less safe place without the outstanding
leadership of Dan Weaver."
Chief Weaver is the staff liaison to the Moscow Human Rights Commission,
a representative of the Latah County Domestic Violence and Sexual
Assault Protocols Task Force and a regular attendee of other human
rights activities. With more than 2,700 hours of POST training, Chief
Weaver is also a guest instructor at the University of Idaho, a past
board member of the Chamber of Commerce, an active member of the Idaho
Chiefs of Police Association and the International Association of Chiefs
of Police and serves on the Advisory Council for the National Institute
of Justice, Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center.
This civic award is presented biennially to honor the memory of two
outstanding Moscow citizens, Ismat Ara Sheikh and her husband, Abdul
Mannan Sheikh, who demonstrated the meaning of community unity in their
personal lives and outreach to the Moscow community. This was marked in
particular with their open invitation to anyone for community
Thanksgiving meals they hosted for many years in Moscow. The Ismat Ara
and Abdul Mannan Sheikh Community Unity Award is to highlight and honor
achievements of a Moscow citizen or group who have made outstanding
commitments to community unity, and who have a history of significant
effort on behalf of diversity and human rights in Moscow and the
surrounding community.
