I would have to agree with Don.

If either a friend or sibling committed a violent crime involving injury
or potential for injury, I would have to report them, but only after
attempting to convince them to turn themselves in.  The alternative
possesses immeasurable/unforeseeable consequences.

It all comes down to self-respect and concern for others.
