[Vision2020] Uncommon reading

Jennifer,

The question is, do the "endowments" you speak of go to the general
treasury of the University to be used as needed or are they targeted to
the Athletic Department?

If they are targeted to the athletic department, and don't go into the
general funds, then closing the athletic department would be a net gain.
The university saves the money it was spending on athletics, and since
they were not getting the endowment money anyway, its not a loss! And
then there is the matter of the "athletic scholarships". If there is no
athletic department, there are no "athletic scholarships", and the
general university funds that were spent on them can go for academic
scholarships.

I'm in favor of an athletic department IF it can be financially viable and
there is extra money, but in time of monetary cut backs, athletics should
be the first to go. No where in the original intent to set up a university
can I find any mention of the athletic department being one of the
cornerstones of a university.
