The California Supreme Court has upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex
marriage, but it also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who
tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed.

In a dissenting opinion, Justice Moreno stated:

"As discussed, there is no 'underlying' principle more basic to our
Constitution than that the equal protection clause protects the
fundamental rights of minorities from the will of the majority.
Accordingly, Proposition 8’s withdrawal of any of those rights from gays
and lesbians cannot be accomplished through constitutional amendment."

Although some of you may applaud the California Supreme Court's opinion,
it is a dark day for equality and human rights.

"Gays and lesbians stood up for civil rights in Montgomery, Selma, in
Albany, Ga. and St. Augustine, Fla., and many other campaigns of the Civil
Rights Movement. Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for
my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own."
