An offline correspondent takes me to task for using "segregation" in referring to Bucer's cigar-smoking room, and she makes a valid point. I was trying to employ the sociological terms of "de jure" and "de facto" in parallel to point out that while there is no "men only" rule (de jure) at Bucer's, the lack of cigar-smoking women probably worked well (de facto) for the men there.
Using the term "segregation," however, was too strong, and I apologize. The only segregation at Bucer's appears to simply be the segregation between cigar smokers and non-cigar smokers, whatever the agenda, and I think I went too far.
Thanks,
Keely
