The inconsistency here is that Letterman's apo;gy was late in coming and did not sound sincere. He did not get any any trouble for it. Contrast that with Immus. He apologizes profussly and went to see the the girls in question in person. He was fired. It seems that one can  get away with jokes about those on the right, but you are in deep trouble if the joke is about a minority, particularly if they are on the left. These sort of things should be off limits no matter who the recipient is( kids in particular)
