Bruce
You are mostly right. I could not believe a 97 lb rattlesnake either, but was faked because of the name, address and phone number listed. I called Mr. Poole. He said that it was a real snake that was killed in Texas, but was probably no where near 97 lbs. A friend in Texas sent it to him and he sent it on to friends in Cottonwood, but neglected to take his name of it and itwas now making the internet rounds and snopes. To my knownlde ther are no rattlesnakes on the palouse or in Cottonwood, but there are some in Kendreck and Juliaetta.

> That sure looked like a diamondback, which is native to the Southwest if of the western variety. (The eastern diamondback is supposed to be bigger, and wikipedia (consider the source, I know) lists the record size as 8 ft, and 26 pounds, though those numbers are debated.)

> The diamondbacks don't live up here, according to the books, so I checked snopes.com. Your picture has been floating around the internet for a while. It's probably a legit picture, but doubtful the Rattler weighed anywhere near 97 pounds, and almost certain that the rattler was NOT found in Kamiah, since it was first listed as being found in Texas and Missouri. And boy am I glad of that!!!
