Roger, this was a campaign ago, but it continues to have relevance. The
charge came out in the Daily News in a letter to the editor from Don Meyer.
You did not retract it when you found out it was untrue. When I called Don
on it he blamed Gary Schroeder and Tom Trail, but backed off that claim and
hung up on me when I told him I was going to call them for verification. I
didn't have to talk with him but a few minutes to realize he had no valid
information to support the claim. You continued to circulate the story.
Right up till election day I had people call to ask if it were true. If
you had retracted it publically, Shirley's campaign could have saved
hundreds of dollars because we had to pay for an ad to rebut Don's letter
and your continued talk. I know you didn't start the lie, but it was
written to advocate a vote for you instead of Shirley and you had a
responsibility to validate it if you were going to continue to spread it.
You may have apologized to her personally after the campaign. I think you
probably did, but the damage was done by then. Fortunately she won anyway
even though I know that lie cost her votes.
