I urge everyone to attend this fundraiser.
I met Emily when she was an extremely shy, 17-year-old, vegetarian freshman at UI and I was the loud-mouthed, opinionated, red meat loving cook at Targhee Hall, where she was living.
I have had the pleasure of watching her break out of her shell and become a strong young woman who is not afraid to express her opinion and to hear her parents comment on that transformation.
She and I may be diametrically opposed and any number of beliefs, but she will always be my favorite "hippie chick", and I wish her, and her family, nothing but the best.
So, take five bucks of that beer money and put it toward a good cause and a great kid.

Birthday Fundraiser Planned for Injured Student

A fundraising dance party is planned for an injured University of Idaho student, Emily Poor, on her birthday, Saturday, October 25, from 7pm until midnight, at Mikey's Gyros, 527 South Main Street in downtown Moscow. A suggested donation of 5 dollars per person will be accepted at the door.

Poor, a graduate student in environmental science at the University of Idaho, was seriously injured in an automobile accident on July 19. She was in northwest Montana collecting plant samples for her master's thesis project. After the accident, she spent 6 days in the hospital in Kalispell, and then a month with her parents in Boise doing therapy at the Elks Rehabilitation Center.

Poor was able to return to Moscow and her studies at the UI this fall, using a walker and three-wheeled scooter for mobility.

Recognizing that her expenses were not totally covered by her insurance, her friends have organized a fundraising dance party for her birthday. Everyone is invited.

The party will be held in the back room at Mikey's Gyros on Saturday, October 25. Partiers are encouraged to buy dinner and join in the mingling beginning at 7pm, and then to stay for the music and dancing beginning at 8pm and continuing until midnight. Beer and wine will be available for purchase until midnight.

The music will be danceable world beat rhythms from local DJ's.

Poor is a well-known figure in the Moscow dance and music scene. She plays trombone with the Moscow Volunteer Peace Band, hosts a folk music show called the Americana Hour on Radio Moscow, KRFP-FM, and is an accomplished singer and dancer.
