Four books by three authors; the second author has read the first and third:
Anti-Intellectualism in American Life by Richard Hofstadter, originally
published in early 1963, and still available in reprint.
Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism by Susan Jacoby, published 2004
The Age of American Unreason by Susan Jacoby, published 2008
After reading these three, which form an informal trilogy, for dessert turn to
Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark.
This quartet of books could base an interesting holiday season conversation.
