[Vision2020] Say What

As the "face" of the University, they are somewhat held to a higher
standard, right? I had an academic scholarship and I'm relatively sure I
wouldn't have lost it for getting into a bar brawl whereas student athletes
can lose theirs for doing the same. If my grades dropped below a certain
cumulative GPA, I could have lost mine. However, for the athlete, he/she
maintain a certain level of performance on the playing field as well as the
classroom. So, while they might not be making above a 3.25, they didn't get
an English scholarship. Likewise I am pleased no one evaluated my club
soccer performances in order for me to keep my academic scholarship . . .

Sunil asks:

"Why should the university set higher standards for those on athletic
scholarships than for regular students?"

I'd say it's because athletics are the public face of the university (at
least one of them). Being married to a former student-athlete, I remember
how the athletic department kept a close eye on her academic progress. And
I don't blame them: They had a lot of money invested in her, and she'd damn
well better perform in the classroom as well as on the field.

Now I, being Joe Student (not Joe the Plumber, Joe the Ag Ed major) was not
as "visible" as she was, per se. But, I had one of the meanest advisors on
the planet who kept me in line. And I thank him for it, and I consider him
a friend.

Along those lines, I'd like to believe that Coach Akey (along with Coaches
Buchanan, Newlee, Verlin, and all the rest) hold their charges to a higher
standard than the rest of the student body. And, of course, higher than
that of those donkeys from bSU. If that means we're going to lose a few
games before we start winning, that's what we'll have to live with.
