They're trying to figure out what to say. Will it be:

a. "Joe [the logician] is illogical." 

b. "Joe's been eating backed goods."

c. "I suppose Joe wants to punch me in the nose now."

d. "We don't have to believe you since you, Joe, are not a Christian. 
At least not in my [narrow] book"

Or:

e. "Look, I already told you that I sin every day!"
