The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends
March 14, 2008
Dear Friends,
The University has been recognized in the 2007 President's Higher
Education Community Service Honor Roll - the highest federal recognition
for commitment to service learning and civic engagement. Throughout the
nation 528 schools made the list, and the University of Idaho was the only
Idaho institution so recognized. Last academic year, 2,213 Vandals engaged
in community service projects through the Associated Students of the
University of Idaho Center for Volunteerism and Social Action, and the
University's Career and Professional Planning Service-Learning Center. Our
students volunteered an estimated 50,000 hours.
The Vandal commitment to service has been in full swing this week: 121
students and advisers are in eight states for Alternative Spring Break
projects. Their efforts range from helping build houses to working with
neglected youth. Through the University's Volunteer Center, the Gay
Straight Alliance are in Salt Lake City to work with youth runaways.
College of Education students are volunteering in New Mexico to lend
helping hands on an Indian reservation.
College of Law students return to New Orleans and to Biloxi, Mississippi
to provide pro bono legal services and manual labor to Hurricane Katrina
victims. Other law students are volunteering in Boise with Idaho Legal
Aid, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Wildland Firefighter
Foundation, the State of Idaho Appellate Public Defender, Advocates for
the West and the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. In
Washington, D.C., students are working with the National Veterans Legal
Service Program.
These efforts by our students are truly inspiring, and the positive
impacts are felt by both those who are helped and the wonderfully engaged
student-citizens who volunteer. My thanks and congratulations to
University of Idaho's very dedicated citizen-students.

honorary alumna Bee Pierce, for their distinguished records of achievement
and service at a public reception in Boise on Tuesday, March 18. The

The Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation, one of the world's leading silver
companies and a significant gold producer, has pledged a gift of $100,000
to the College of Business and Economics. The funds will allow the college
to reward some of its best faculty and invest in strategic programs like
entrepreneurship and the newly launched executive education initiatives in
northern Idaho. Coeur d'Alene Mines is led by two University of Idaho
graduates: Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis
Wheeler '64 and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer James
Sabala '78. Both have degrees from the College of Business and Economics.
