Skyview High graduate goes to UI at 15 By Kendall Murrant kmurrant at idahopress.com NAMPA – Meaghan Jones is not your typical high school graduate. She
earned the title of a National Merit Scholar and held Summa Cum Laude
honors with an above-4.0 grade-point average. She was the salutatorian
for her graduating Skyview High School class. She’s good at both
calculus and English Literature. And she just turned 15. Jones, who will turn 16 in February, said that in spite of her age, she doesn’t feel any different than her graduating peers. “I don’t even think of myself as a 15-year-old for the most part,” Meaghan said. Meaghan
was home-schooled by her mother for parts of her elementary and junior
high education. At the age of 12, she enrolled as a freshman at Skyview
High School because her scholastic interests started to take a
mathematical and scientific direction that Meaghan said was out of her
mom’s league. “She was really into
history and English, but I was interested in math,” Meaghan said. “I
really wanted to do things like chemistry or literature classes with
big reading lists or the kind of lab classes and things you can’t do at
home.” Meaghan took several advanced
courses at the high school from the start and decided to combine her
sophomore and junior high school years into one during the 2006-2007
academic year. “I want to go join…..the real world,” she said. Despite
going through high school so quickly and at such a young age, “I
honestly don’t think I missed out on much,” Meaghan said. After
visiting the University of Idaho campus earlier this school year, she
“fell in love with the campus” and decided to enroll seeking a degree
in anthropology and possibly a math minor. “I’m excited for college. There are more people with wider viewpoints,” Jones, a self-described vegan said. Aside
from academics courses, Jones said she enjoyed being on Skyview’s
ballroom team and plans to pursue that aspect of her life in college as
well.
