The US does provide for the food needs of its citizens. How many people do you know that have died for lack of food availability?

People die in this country because of lack of medical care, if anything. That is because the government blocks the free markets driving costs up beyond what most people can afford.

No matter how affluent a society is there will be people who, either due to
disability or disinclination, fail to make ends meet. The privately
organized food bank is a perfectly legitimate means of helping these people
out. Is it your contention that it would be better that the government drive
around in a large truck and deliver food to these peoples doorstep,
eliminating the need for them to ever have to step out into the world? Just
what mechanism for assistance do you envision that an "affluent and
technologically advanced" nation might come up with that would be less
shameful?
