Paul,
The Democrats were the ones that spent the money on Iraqi. Hillary, Edwards, Kerry, etc., all voted to support the war and spend all that money we don't have.
You know, it is actually the Democratically controlled Congress that is in control of the purse strings and they are the ones approving all this wasteful spending.
Yes, Bush is an idiot for creating this war, but at anytime between 2003 to 2006 the US House and Senate could have ended the war. They chose not to. And continued to fund it.
I agree with you however, we should not bail out those that made bad loans or took bad loans. Nobody helps out the scandal ridden loans for college students, I am not going to support the bailing out of crooks and fools.
The rebates are fine, so long as they mandate it to be spent within 6 months and they go to the bottom 50% of income earners. Otherwise, it will just be money sitting in savings of a rich guy.
Best Regards,
Donovan

I roll my eyes at "free spending democrat". Compared to how much money
we've thrown at the war that citizens of this country were unethically
and possibly illegally coerced into starting, how bad can these "free
spending democrats" actually be?
I do agree that the rebates are a bad idea. I would place the blame for
this recession equally on the shoulders of the mortgage companies that
drew many people into mortgages they couldn't afford later, and on the
shoulders of the people who fell for it. The real estate fallout isn't
the sole cause for the recession, but I imagine it's a large portion of
it. Blaming all the people that got suckered into a bad deal is
probably being overzealous. Not everyone is a financial wizard. That's
why there are disclosure laws.
