Shoe-tossing rallies planned for Toronto, Montreal

MONTREAL — Canadian anti-war protests inspired by the shoe-throwing
incident involving U.S. President George W. Bush are set for today.

Protesters in Montreal and Toronto will be calling for the release of
Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi.

He was detained after he hurled his shoes at Bush during a Iraqi news
conference last Sunday.

The act came with an angry farewell in which al-Zeidi blamed Bush for the
bloodshed in his country that's left countless women widows and children
orphans.

The protesters will also call on the U.S. to leave Iraq and Afghanistan
and for Canada to end its mission in Kandahar.

Participants are encouraged to bring extra footwear for tossing, but
organizers say shoes will be provided at the rally.

The Montreal protest is slated to begin at the U.S. consulate and end at a
downtown Canadian Forces recruiting station, while Toronto protesters will
gather downtown across from the U.S. consulate.
