Sutton served the area well

Yesterday's newspaper (Daily News, Dec. 16) carried the obituary of
Charles "Chuck" Sutton, and I feel compelled to comment on the life of
this outstanding man.

He was certainly one of Moscow's giants of his generation. Of the many
jobs he held in his 36-year career in the Moscow School District, I
believe his favorite was junior high principal. He loved the kids but was
no pushover.

I was a student at Moscow High School in the 1960s when Chuck was a coach.
He respected all and feared none. (For the rest of his life I called
him "Coach," which always brought a smile to his face.)

In the 1980s when the school district was in disarray and desperately
needed strong competent leadership, the school board and the community of
Moscow knew that Chuck Sutton was the man with the brains, experience and
strength of character to serve as superintendent of schools, and serve he
did with uncommon wisdom, humility and success.

Chuck was a builder of generations of Moscow's youth into men and women
and for that, the world is a better place. May the angels welcome him into
Paradise.

Although I may not know of Mr. Sutton, my wife Rodna (who was a student in
Mr. Sutton's Biology class in 1965) remembers him fondly as one of the
finest teachers she remembers from her days at Moscow High School.

Rest well, Mr. Sutton.
