Tall Tale Not So Tall After All

The August 11th Fast Track page told the story of a British army finance
clerk found with about $200,000 in sequentially numbered $100 bills hidden
under a potted plant in his home. He claimed it was a profit from alcohol
cigarettes, Viagra, and other items to fellow troops while deployed to the
Iraq war zone, not cash stolen from the military.

Now comes word that a military court believes him.

The Times of London reported that the 35-year-old clerk, Mark McKay, was
found not guilty of theft and had a freeze on his pending promotion to
sergeant major immediately lifted in a case dating back to 2003.
Prosecutors could not show the money came from the military or even that
any money was missing from the military, the newspaper said.

McKay claimed he made the money selling items to British, Australian, and
U.S. troops during four months of service in the war zone in 2003. He
said the $200,000 was part of more than $370,000 he made reselling hard-to-
find items, and added that he stashed the money in a flowerpot to hide it
from his wife, from whom he is separating.

students are not very active in local elections (thank goodness!)."
