The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project designed a machine with 1 or 2
gigabytes of flash memory as a data storage device. Compare that quantity
with 700 megabytes or 0.7 gigabytes on a CD-ROM, or 4.7 gigabytes on a DVD
platter.
12 March 2007 Intel announced availability of 1, 2, 4, and 8 gigabyte solid
state storage devices for whatever device might need that level of storage,
including something like a laptop for OLPC.
Today's announcement is significant in that the storage amounts start at 80
GB next month, and move to 160 GB early next year. These storage amounts
make them candidates for replacing currently available hard drives, not
just a substitute for an external silver data platter.
