I don't think that anyone is advocating a "totally unfettered free market" As you stated that leads to collusion, corruption and theft not to mention a host of other ills. A relatively free market with some oversight is what most free market advocates favor. There will always be some who will try to beat the system no matter what regulations ar in place. The basics of the free market is what has made this country what it is today and the leader in the global economy. There is not one socialist government with strict controls over the means of production that has ever survived and provided their citizens with anything close to a good life, let alone freedom of expression. As for corruption, theft, etc it is much greater in these societies.
