  Saturday, May 19, 2007

Sunday, May 13, 2007, marked the passing of local farmer Donald Joseph Linehan. Don was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Genesee, to Arthur and Catherine Cunningham Linehan. Don had a brother, Rayfield, and three sisters, Marjorie, Catherine and Elizabeth (Betty). Don attended Lincoln Country School and graduated from Genesee High School in 1929. He attended one year at Gonzaga University and three years at the University of Idaho, graduating in 1937 with a degree in business and agriculture. He received the business school honorary Alpha Kappa Psi.
Don put his eyes on Marie H. Wagner at a church function, and they courted for five years. He convinced her to marry him on Jan. 5, 1938. They flew on a Ford tri-motor airliner to Seattle for their honeymoon.
Don and Marie purchased farm ground outside of Genesee, and eventually took over Don's father's land, where he employed innovative soil conservation practices on the farm that Arthur began. Don thoroughly enjoyed farming, he was an avid gardener, raised purebred Hereford cattle, was a member of the Idaho Wheat Growers, sat on the board of Genesee Union Warehouse, and was president of the Farmer's Union Producers Co. for six years.
Don was active in St. Mary's Parish and the Genesee community. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus (grand knight for two terms). Don helped build the new St. Mary's church after the fire. He was honored as grand marshal at Genesee Community Days.
In his lifetime, Don had four children with Marie. He was crazy about his children and grandchildren. Don traveled around the world and loved fishing and hunting.
Don was preceded in death by his daughter, Joan Linehan Jurgensen; and twin sons, Larry and Gary.
Don is survived by his wife of 691/2 years, Marie Wagner Linehan, at Lewiston Rehabilitation & Care Center; sister, Catherine Lavery of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Greg Linehan and wife Heidi of Genesee; grandchildren, Karen Jurgensen and husband Peter Bonnell of Seattle, Kirsten Jurgensen and husband Dan Wilcock of Hammond, Ore., Solara Linehan of Arlington, Va., Emma Linehan of Pocatello, L/CPL Thomas Linehan, 12th Marine Regiment; great-grandchildren, Natasha Wilcock and Aage Bonnell.
Memorial service to be held in November when grandson Thomas returns from overseas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Genesee Ambulance fund.
