School Denies Jeb Bush Honorary Degree
Faculty Expressed Concern Over Higher Education Record

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Former Gov. Jeb Bush will not get an honorary degree
from the University of Florida.

The school's Faculty Senate voted 38-to-28 Thursday against giving the
honorary degree to Bush, who left office in January.

University of Florida President Bernie Machen said he is "tremendously
disappointed" with the decision.

Machen said the former governor has been a "great friend of the University
of Florida" and that the Senate's action is "unheard of."

Machen said that Bush has worked for school's best interest, such as
providing the funding to attract nationally recognized faculty.

Some faculty expressed concern about Bush's record in higher education. Bush
has also been criticized for his "One Florida" proposal, an initiative that
ended race-based admissions programs at state universities.

Although this is not major news, this action strongly reflects the
University of Florida's attitude toward its former state governor.
