The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends
June 22, 2007

Dear Friends,

What happens when a former president of the Associated Students of the
University of Idaho
(ASUI) and a dedicated, energetic current student leader get together?

Evidently some very good things, such as a new initiative to provide
future leadership
development opportunities to our students. Yesterday in Washington, D.C.,
we signed an
agreement to create the U.S. Senator Larry E. Craig ASUI Student
Leadership Endowment. You
can credit the initiative to the generous support of Senator Larry
Craig '69 and the
vision and drive of one of our student leaders, Chelsea Smith.

Senator Craig has for many years directed that his honoraria for speaking
engagements be
donated to an endowment fund at the University of Idaho, and the fund now
has grown to
more than $25,000. Through her work in student government, Chelsea became
aware of the
endowment fund and took a proposal to the Senator last year to use the
endowment to
provide "opportunities outside of the traditional classroom setting,
where students can
engage, learn and gain skills from hands-on, real-life leadership
experiences. Simply put,
learning by doing."

The proposal, and Chelsea's enthusiasm and leadership abilities, struck a
chord with
Senator Craig, who served as ASUI president in the late 1960s. Chelsea
completed her
economics studies and is pursing additional degrees in international
studies and French.
She also is involved in ASUI fundraising.

My thanks and congratulations to Chelsea and Senator Craig. Their efforts
identified and
created a new way to let our students explore their leadership potential
and achieve their
educational and life goals. I am grateful for their leadership, as it
will inspire and
create opportunities for others.

Tim White
President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

A silent auction at the Prichard Art Gallery to benefit the Shantelle
Scott Memorial
Scholarship Fund culminates at a reception tonight from 5-8 p.m. at the
Hoffman Building
at 504 South Main Street in downtown Moscow. The event will raise funds
for the
scholarship that helps Native American women attend the University of
Idaho. Thirty-seven
pieces of art by 26 artists are up for bid, including works by George
Flett, Ross Coates,
Marilyn Lysohir, Louise Barber, Cheryll Halsey, Kay Montgomery, William
Voxman, Kemo
Scott, Ray Esparsen and Sarah Penney. The Nez Perce drum group Lightening
Creek will
provide entertainment for the finale.

For the seventh consecutive year, the School of Journalism and Mass Media
has received a $10,000 grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation to
sponsor a summer
workshop for high school students. The seventh annual Scripps Howard
Multicultural Journalism Workshop runs June 24-30. Up to 20 high school
students from around
the Northwest will spend the week learning about the news business from
professional journalists and Idaho students and faculty. To learn more
about giving to the
School of Journalism and Mass Media or the Scripps Howard Multicultural
Journalism Workshop, please contact Jennie Hall at 208-885-5013 or

Trudy Anderson has been named as the University of Idaho Boise's
associate vice president
and center executive officer - a newly configured position that she'll
step into on July
1. Anderson has served as dean of the University's Boise center since
2002 and focused on
diverse issues of higher education in urban areas, such as access,
research and creative
activities. The executive position was revised with an emphasis on
educational
entrepreneurism. Anderson will balance the University's key focus areas
of teaching,
learning, scholarly and creative activity with strategic development
goals. She will
enhance outreach and engagement with an eye toward improving the quality
of life in
southern Idaho, and explore deeper ways for the University to intersect
with social,
economic, science and public policy issues and initiate innovative
programs with
community, state, private and University stakeholders.

Communications and Marketing at (208) 885-6291 or uinews at uidaho.edu.
