[Vision2020] Sitler wore a Kirk-orange jumpsuit:Mr. Schwallerdidnot appear

For the future of the community what this unfortunate exchange, probably initially born out of extreme frustration, illustrates more than anything in my opinion is that currently the methods and means of disseminating information about pedophiles and other high risk offenders present in our community is cumbersome and is not working very well.

Excuse me for repeating: The local media needs to keeps us informed with pictures, address, and a summary and brief description of the offenses whenever an offender moves into or changes location in the area. Also, an officially maintained website with a click and view map would also be an even greater help for those with internet access.

It all seems to me that the state law dealing with where certain kinds of sexual offenders can live needs to strengthened to include minimum distances from day care centers, parks, and other places where children are likely to be found. I also think the 500' distance from schools in the current statute is too little a distance.

I agree with parts of Tom Ivie's earlier post. We ought not be lumping all sex offenders together and treating them alike. Some pose much, much greater danger to the community than others. We need to recognize this and adjust the statutes accordingly.

That said, however, we need to rethink about what to do with serial pedophiles and other dangerous offenders once they are released. In my opinion, the balance between the rights of a pedophile who has served his sentence and the safety of children in a community are skewed presently in favor of the offenders in Idaho.

Although some ugly comments have appeared in the general discussions of Sitler, what is positive is that some people are willing now to deal openly with the issue and discuss it in open and candid terms. From this I hope positive change can come.

Child sexual abuse is difficult to eradicate or even reduce because of the serious amount of undetected cases and unreported once detected cases. That this situation exists does not speak well of our general commitment to the safety of our community's children.

W.

I was in Spokane most of yesterday and missed the exchange regarding Phil Gray, but while Debbie says it better than I ever could, I will say this:

Enough.

Phil Gray, like all of the other deputies and police officers, is a hero in a community sadly lacking in them. My alliance, as it were, is with people who speak the truth when they know it and seek the truth when they don't have it. It's not with name-calling bombthrowers, no matter how much they dislike Christ Church. A concern about a local organization is not enough of a point of commonality for me to accept recklessness like this, and I have to express my deep regret to Debbie and Phil and everyone else painted with such a venomous brush. It's wrong -- factually, morally, and every other way.
