The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends July 20, 2007
Dear Friends,
The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China are more than a year away, but
already Leah Schwisow is counting the days until the opening ceremony. Leah
is a sophomore from Melba, Idaho, and she is majoring in biology and theater
arts. She's also a leader of "Olympic" proportions.
Leah is one of just 30 students from around the country, and the only one in
the Pacific Northwest, to be chosen as a volunteer team leader by the
Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games. She will lead a team of
10 other university student volunteers during the Games, which depend on
thousands of volunteers to provide all manner of services necessary to run
smoothly and be successful. Her first introduction to Beijing begins in a
few weeks with a training excursion. She'll meet with the Olympic Committee
to learn about her role and responsibilities, and to take a crash course in
speaking Chinese.
Volunteerism and leadership are like oxygen for Leah. On campus, she's
involved in the Associated Students of the University of Idaho's Center for
Volunteerism and Social Action. Volunteering at the international level is
an exciting and rewarding next step. Leah serves as a wonderful example of
the impact our students have in Idaho and around the world. She is a leader
- in true University of Idaho style.

geoscience knowledge and insight to human needs, aspirations, and
stewardship of the Earth. The global professional society has more than
20,500 members in more than 85 countries.

in Room 258 of Molstead Library in Coeur d'Alene, are free to K-12 teachers.
The July 24 session, "Financial Literacy Teacher Training," will be
presented by Marty Yopp, director University of Idaho Center on Economic
Education. The July 25 session, "Teaching the Ethical Foundations of
Economics," will be presented by Kali Kurdy, program director of the Idaho

Clint '60 and Eleanor Gardner of Tustin, Calif., recently established the
Clinton J. and Eleanor R. Gardner Excellence in Athletics Scholarship in
support of undergraduate student athletes enrolled full time in any
degree-granting program at the University Idaho. According to Clint, "I
enjoyed campus and the education I got at the University of Idaho. It gave
me an excellent background for a successful business career. This is one way
to partially pay back what I owe." For more information on establishing an
endowed scholarship, please contact Heidi Linehan in Gift Planning Services
at (208) 885-5304 or hlinehan at uidaho.edu.
