[Vision2020] IGNORE HIM: A Sabbath Contemplation for Mr. Schwaller

Dear Mr. Schwaller,

For today’s contemplation we shall consider the
decision made by the assembly of Reformed leaders who
met to discuss various issues plaguing the Reformed
church — particularly the plague Doug Wilson.

I will not disclose the names of those in attendance,
however I will note that the man who hosted the
meeting debriefed me on a number of issues relating to
the plague at hand. At the same time, he informed me
of the three embarrassing facts he and others had in
hand to close the deal, if any naysayers held out that
it behooved them to work with Wilson. Taken in order,
these are the three points:

1. The patently false representations regarding
nineteenth-century slavery in the US in Wilson’s
booklet “Southern Slavery As It Was” and its racist
implications.

2. The patently obvious plagiarism that Pastor Wilson
committed as con author and the editor of “Southern
Slavery As It Was.”

3. The patently evil interpretation of Scripture in “A
Serrated Edge,” where Pastor Wilson attributed the
racist insult “nigger” to the Son of God.

According to the summit’s host, any ONE of these three
facts, taken alone, was enough to smear the Reformed
gospel for a hundred years. He then noted that ALL of
these three facts taken together were enough to
destroy the evangelical gospel AND the evangelical
church in America for one hundred years. I will not
disclose the (possible) worst-case scenario that he
hypothesized and how it would destroy the gospel, but
suffice to say that he and others successfully pressed
upon this summit of Reformed leaders the absolute
necessity of disassociating themselves from Pastor
Wilson forever and ever, amen.

In calling this historical fact to your attention, I
would not have you reflect upon this remarkable
gathering of Reformed dignitaries who assembled to
arraign Douglas Wilson behind his back; rather, I
would have you reflect upon the poetic justice
involved with the very fact of this noble assembly’s
existence. Two thoughts immediately come to mind:

First, Douglas Wilson sees himself as the heir
apparent — the next high-profile or visible “leader” —
of the Christian church in America, which is a fact
this summit did not know. Therefore, it is ironic that
this summit of Reformed leaders deliberately did not
invite the man who deems himself THE “next leader” of
the Church, and it is even more ironic that they met
with the express purpose of nullifying and voiding his
future impact on the Church. How beautiful.

Secondly, and more importantly, I am certain that
these men did not know that Pastor Wilson regularly
connives behind the backs of his sheep, when he needs
to cap potential problems. The list of names is
seemingly endless, dating back to 1993 when planned to
whack his elders after they notified him that they
intended to remove him from the Christian ministry.
Starting with Bob, Fred, and Terry, you can jump
forward to Evan, the two Charlies, Brian, Chip, Duck,
Randy, Michael, Gary, etc., etc., etc. All of these
sheep posed enormous difficulties for Pastor Wilson
because of WHAT they knew, and consequently he
resolved to eliminate them, unbeknownst to them,
before they acted on their knowledge.

The various WAYS that Pastor Wilson ultimately decides
to eliminate his sheep are not relevant here, despite
their novel creativity (and cruelty). The important
point of relevance is that a body of Reformed hitters
secretly met behind Pastor Wilson’s back, without
malicious intent, to cure his problem. Further, they
did not lie to his face while they schemed to
assassinate him; no, they recognized his threat and
simply planned to remedy it. But they did it in good
faith without his knowledge, just as he does to those
in his charge, with bad faith, without their
knowledge. Even better, they arrived at the same
solution for Pastor Wilson that he always imposes on
his sheep after he slays them: IGNORE THEM.

The Reformed WORLD resolved to ignore you, Mr.
Schwaller, rather than engage you. However, in
obedience to the gospel they have not determined to
hate you and ridicule you, as you do to your sheep;
they have simply chosen to ignore you.

And if you have any vision at all you should reckon
this a down payment on your eternal reward. You and
Jones and all your insignificant others should expect
the joint heirs with Christ to ignore you for all
eternity, as just compensation for your wicked works
in time, for this is poetic justice.

Now hurry along and keep telling yourself that you are
a very important man.

Dougs’ Hero
